At Jazz Ireland, we’ve always been passionate about connecting people with the vibrant and ever-evolving Irish jazz scene. Today, we’re thrilled to announce the launch of a brand-new video series, In the Groove. This exciting series is dedicated to celebrating the stories, artistry, and people that make jazz in Ireland so unique.
What is In the Groove?
In the Groove is a deep dive into the lives, inspirations, and creative processes of the extraordinary musicians who shape the Irish jazz community. Each episode features in-depth interviews, candid conversations, and exclusive behind-the-scenes insights. Whether you’re a long-time jazz enthusiast or new to the scene, this series promises to inspire, inform, and entertain.
In our debut episode, we sit down with the acclaimed guitarist and composer Phil Robson, who shares his thoughts on the Irish jazz scene, his influences, and his future plans. Filmed in the intimate setting of his home in Roscommon, the episode also features a look ahead to his upcoming gig at Arthur’s Blues and Jazz Club on January 26th, 2025. Phil’s trio—featuring Dave Redmond (double bass) and Dominic Mullan (drums)—is not to be missed!
Meet the Team Behind the Series
In the Groove is produced by Hayley Kavanagh and Eric Doyle, two passionate musicians and advocates for Irish jazz and the community surrounding it. After spending seven years living and performing in Prague and Berlin, the two returned to Ireland in 2023. Since then, they have immersed themselves in the Dublin jazz scene. Performing with their own projects and working as sidemen, as well as co-founding Cookin’ Dublin, a jazz event guide and jam session series, and the Arthur’s Jazz Jam at Arthur’s Blues and Jazz Club.
Hayley (saxophone and flute) and Eric (guitar), both freelance musicians, possess a deep understanding of the challenges and joys of being part of a musical community. This makes them uniquely suited to this project. They believe that platforms like In the Groove play a vital role in fostering connections and showcasing the talent that Ireland has to offer.
Why You Should Tune In
In the Groove isn’t just about music; it’s about the people behind it. It’s a celebration of creativity, collaboration, and community. By tuning in, you’ll gain a richer appreciation for the artists and their work, while discovering new ways to support and engage with Irish jazz.
Each episode is more than an interview; it’s a chance to step into the world of the musicians, hear their stories, and connect with their passion. We’ll cover everything from upcoming gigs and new projects to reflections on the broader jazz landscape.
