National Concert Hall presents John McLaughlin and the Fourth Dimension - 26th May 2022 at 8pm
John McLaughlin is one of jazz’s most influential guitarists, from his work with Miles Davis in his ground-breaking fusion era to projects such as Mahavisnhu and Shakti. His lengthy career has seen him undertake many diverse projects as well as taking time out to give guitar lessons to Jimmy Page and jam with Jimi Hendrix. McLaughlin is globally lauded as a one of the 20th century’s most significant guitarists and a pioneer of jazz fusion.
McLaughlin’s early years saw him working with luminaries such as Alexis Korner, Georgie Fame and the Blue Flames and the Graham Bond Organisation in the 1960s. After moving to the US in 1969 he joined forces with Miles Davis and played on several of his albums including In A Silent Way, Bitches Brew, Live-Evil, On The Corner, Big Fun and A Tribute To Jack Johnson. His growing reputation saw him become an in-demand session player and led to recordings with The Rolling Stones, Wayne Shorter and Larry Coryell to name but a few. The decade also saw him collaborate with Carlos Santana and bassist Jaco Pastorius.
He has been awarded multiple ‘Guitarist of the Year’ and ‘Best Jazz Guitarist’ awards from magazines such as Downbeat and Guitar. In 2010 Jeff Beck called McLaughlin ‘the best guitarist alive’.
Mc Laughlin's band project - 4th Dimension - brings together musicians from different cultures and musical traditions to form an all-star band. The line-up features Gary Husband on keyboards, Étienne M’Bappé on bass and drummer Ranji Barot. The music of this group integrates all these cultural influences in a unique way while at the same time preserving the spontaneity of jazz.
