The all-star ‘Artifacts Trio’ – flautist Nicole Mitchell, cellist Tomeka Reid and drummer Mike Reed – have long been recognized as torchbearers of Chicago’s renowned jazz scene. The trio consists of members of The Art Ensemble of Chicago and The Association for the Advancement of Creative Music (AACM) i.e. the historically vital, leading-edge Chicago arts organization, which began in 1965.
Their approach follows the ‘Ancient to the Future’ AACM motto, celebrating African American culture while reaching across genres and integrating new ideas into the legacy of jazz, experimentalism, and composition. Musically, the Artifacts Trio sound is groove aplenty. It is highly ambitious, yet fun, personal, yet far-reaching, and carries the legacy of AACM with thoughtful ease.
It is a huge honour to welcome this incredible band to the island for the first time and bring a slice of Chicago to Belfast. Not to be missed.
