John Moriarty Trio (jazz)
John Moriarty - guitar; Barry Donohue - double bass; Dominic Mullen - drums
The John Moriarty Trio is a contemporary jazz ensemble that brings a fresh perspective to the genre while remaining deeply rooted in tradition. With John Moriarty on guitar, Barry Donohue on double bass, and Dominic Mullen on drums, each member of the trio is a seasoned improviser and a stalwart of the Irish jazz scene. Their shared passion for modern swing-based jazz is complemented by influences from classical music, Latin rhythms, and fusion.
The trio's journey began over 18 years ago, with John, Barry, and Dominic collaborating in various settings. During the 2020 pandemic, Dublin's jazz musicians stayed connected through small, informal sessions. It was during these sessions that the trio took shape, exploring new compositions and techniques. Inspired by Dominic's observation that guitar trios were a rarity in Ireland compared to the classic piano trio format, they began delving into overlooked aspects of the jazz repertoire. This exploration included unique compositions by Thelonious Monk and Wayne Shorter, as well as original compositions.
