Bray Jazz Festival will present a double bill programme for Culture Night in 2024, showcasing how two groups have approached, in a unique way, how traditional Irish music can be incorporated into jazz and improvised music.

Belfast-based Córas Trio are leading lights in a fresh wave of Irish musicians exploring links between the ancient and the 21st century, their music is steeped in free improv, electronic music, and trad. Navá is a group of that comprises Irish folk and bluegrass musicians who have teamed up with two Iranian brothers to explore and celebrate the ancient musical cultures of Ireland and Persia.

Notably, both groups have represented Ireland at WOMEX (worldwide music expo) , bringing their unique and distinct visions of cultural cross-pollination to life at the celebrated UK world music festival.

Navá comprise Irish banjo player Paddy Kiernan and bassist Niall Hughes, and Iranian born brothers Shahab and Shayan Coohe. They were nomination for Best Folk Group at the 2022 RTE Folk Awards.

Córas Trio comprise Kevin McCullagh (fiddle, electronics), Paddy McKeown (guitar, electronics) and Conor McAuley (drums). The Belfast-based trio are part of a new creative wave, taking Irish music to the outer reaches where the spirits of Schoenberg and Sun Ra play with Seán Ó Riada and Tommie Potts. The trio released their debut album in Dublin last month.

On Córas Trio: “…fusing Irish traditional music, collective improvisation, free jazz and human-computer interaction, four of my very favourite things in music…” New Music Fix, BBC Sounds

On Navá: "Catching them live is a must, as these tunes will surely glisten in the heat of live performance" - The Irish Times
