And there are also some impressions of this year's Berliner Jazz Tage with contributions by the Joachim Kuehn Quartet with the HR Big Band and Ambrose Akimusire's Origamo Harvest Project. "The November of my Jazz".
On this edition I would like to bring you back in time for a stroll down 52nd Street in the heart of New York City to meet some legendary characters of Jazz and to inhale some of the hot spot's musical vibrations with music by Tadd Dameron, Harlan Leonrad's Rockets, Sarah Vaughan, John Coltrane, Chu Berry, Joe Lovano, Jack Bruce as well as Charlie, Miles and Dizzy.
The Hot Box #052 continues down the alphabet of pianists, and this time investigates the musicians filed under the letter T. A file that contains at least 3 of the all-time legends of jazz, not to mention 4 piano players with the same surname!
As with most interesting stories it started with a saxophone, then a google search, then an idea. Roseanne Lynch actor, playwright and partner in Darn Skippy Productions had left her saxophone idle for some time much to the dismay of husband Richard Lennon who thought it was time she picked it back up again. He went out and bought her a set of reads and Roseanne played again.
She decided to look up female saxophonists on Google and found a radio documentary on Lyric FM by Marc Mc Menamin about Zandra Mitchell, Ireland’s first professional female saxophonist. Inspired by the story she decided to write a play about Zandra.
