Tom Caraher to Release Debut Album Ninety Degrees with Launch Event at Arthur’s

A fresh wave of energy is sweeping through the Irish jazz scene with the release of Ninety Degrees, the highly anticipated debut album from saxophonist and composer Tom Caraher. Officially launching on March 10, 2025, the album will be celebrated with a live performance at Arthur’s Blues & Jazz Club in Dublin on April 10, 2025. Tickets and event details here.

Stephen Graham (marlbank.net) captures the buzz: “One of the most scintillating debuts emanating from the Irish scene in years.” With its fusion of 1970s electric jazz, modern jazz-rock, and vibrant funk influences, Ninety Degrees is a bold statement of artistry and collaboration, with Caraher leading a powerhouse ensemble of some of Ireland’s finest musicians.

The Music: Heat and Transformation

Written on the rugged shores of Banna Strand, Co. Kerry, Ninety Degrees channels the energy of the landscape and the band’s collective chemistry. The album features five original compositions and a fresh reimagining of Michelle by The Beatles. Listeners can expect dynamic grooves, lush harmonies, and expansive improvisation reminiscent of Weather Report, Chris Potter, and Roy Hargrove’s RH Factor.

The Band: A Who’s Who of Irish Jazz

Caraher surrounds himself with an all-star lineup:

  • Paul Dunlea (Trombone): Renowned Cork-based musician and leader of the New Irish Jazz Orchestra, Dunlea’s commanding sound adds depth and texture to the record.
  • Darragh O’Kelly (Fender Rhodes, Piano): A staple of Ireland’s contemporary jazz scene, O’Kelly’s versatility shines, blending acoustic and electronic textures with ease.
  • Barry Donohue (Electric Bass): Known for his work across jazz, classical, and world music, Donohue brings a rich rhythmic foundation and melodic sensitivity.
  • Shane O’Donovan (Drums): With a style that fuses jazz with electronic music influences, O’Donovan’s drumming propels the music forward with infectious energy.

The Artist: A Global Journey to the Heart of Irish Jazz

Born in Bangkok and raised across Cambodia, Pakistan, Ireland, and the U.S., Caraher’s diverse upbringing and Berklee education shape his distinct musical voice. Returning to Ireland, he quickly became a vital part of the country’s jazz fabric, performing with ensembles like the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, ZASKA, and the Dublin City Jazz Orchestra.

Reflecting on the album, Caraher says: “This music was shaped by the musicians just as much as it was by the compositions themselves. Without this band, the record would be something entirely different. It’s a document of our time playing together and the energy we brought to these sessions.”

The Ninety Degrees album launch promises to be a standout event for Irish jazz, showcasing Caraher’s unique compositional style and the collective brilliance of his band. Don’t miss the chance to experience this dynamic music live at Arthur’s on April 10, 2025.
