The Hot Box #020 – A Tale of Two Festivals

In Hot Box Episode 20 we pay homage to two jazz festivals that present contrasting pleasures to jazz fans over the October public holiday weekend in Ireland. The one celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2017 and is recognised worldwide as one of the major jazz-focussed events in the calendar, the other remains something of a secret, but gaining in its reach and appeal each year.

Talking Jazz with Lily de Sylva

Back in 1977, while the rest of the world was busy discovering punk rock and the rings of Uranus, I made a couple of discoveries of my own; a long-lost uncle and, thanks to him, a whole new world of music.  We had just 2 records in our house, so our first visit to Uncle Denis was quite a shock to the system… in his living room, there was an entire wall of floor-to-ceiling shelves stuffed with LPs, and almost all of them were jazz recordings.  Denis couldn’t believe that I hadn’t heard any jazz before, and he had no doubt about the best way to get me started.  “You’ve got to listen to this!” he said, putting on Django Reinhardt et le Quintet du Hot Club de France.  30 seconds in, and I was hooked.

Tales from the far Side 05.10.2017 The Best in Jazz

On this edition I stay with the music by artists who play during this year's Galway Jazz Festival and bring their wonderful music to the West. You can hear Simone Graziano, the Haz'art Trio, Simon Nabatov, Mike Nielsen solo and with his Quartet and there is Monk's Misterioso played by Tony Miceli and Thelonious 4.
